Governance and the HE in FECs Strategy Seminar

Event Overview

This seminar being held in collaboration with the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) and the Leadership Foundation for Higher
Education (LFHE) will offer college governors the opportunity to discuss the issues below in three group discussions led by governors:

  • HE strategies
  • QAA developments: IQER and FDAP
  • FE/HE partnerships

Two very recent decisions highlight the increased focus on strategic thinking for higher education in further education colleges (HE in FECs) and the importance of a strategic input from governors as well as further education college principals and higher education managers:

  •  the Board of the Higher Education Funding Council for England agreed at its meeting on 17 December 2008 that HE strategies would be requested in February 2009 from all FECs with higher education provision for submission in autumn 2009. HEFCE will require the strategy to have governing body support. The paper presented to the Board can be downloaded at: http://www.hefce.ac.uk/pubs/board/2008/124/107.pdf
  • colleges with more than 100 full-time equivalent students directly funded by HEFCE will also be required to submit a Widening participation strategic assessment by 30June 2009 with the support of governors. Submission will be made a condition of the continued receipt of the HEFCE widening participation allocation. The request is set out in publication 2009/01 available on the HEFCE website.
