about governance

"College governors are people from the college's community who wish to make a positive contribution to the education of learners of all ages. Governors are a volunteer force who have an important part to play in raising standards through their three key roles of setting strategic direction, ensuring accountability and monitoring and evaluating college performance" (DfES)

Since the incorporation of further education and sixth form colleges in 1993, the significance of this "volunteer force" and the increasing importance of their individual and collective role in governance, both to each institution and to the sector in general, has come to be fully recognised.

This section of the website will demonstrate the significance of governance in the sector by providing an overview of the learning and skills environment in which governing boards currently operate, details of how governing boards work and information on the roles and responsibilities of the members of the governing board.
